History of Aisu Kage Ryū
Unveiling the remarkable Aisu Kage Ryū (愛洲陰流), the pinnacle of sword fighting excellence. Founded by Aisu Iko, also known as Aizu Hyūga-no-Kami Iko or Aisu Hisatada (1452 – 1538), this distinguished school emerges from the depths of history. Aisu, initially a formidable pirate hailing from Kumano, embarked on daring ventures, plundering Japanese and Chinese shipping with audacity that occasionally carried him to distant shores of the Chinese mainland.
Fate intervened when Aisu faced a harrowing shipwreck off Kyushu, leaving him as the sole survivor. In the aftermath of this life-altering event, he renounced his piratical existence, seeking solace and wisdom within the seclusion of the Udo caves nestled in Miyazaki Prefecture. Legend has it that it was within the cavernous sanctuary that Aisu was bestowed with divine enlightenment in a visionary encounter with a monkey deity, who revealed the secrets of sublime swordsmanship.
Thus, Aisu aptly christened his newfound style the Kage (“Shadow”) School, seamlessly intertwining movements inspired by the raw power of natural phenomena, such as the relentless wind and the undulating waves. Transcending mortal boundaries, this school encapsulates the very essence of fluidity and finesse.
Lineage of Aisu Kage Ryū
Guided by the tutelage of Aisu, the lineage continued with the venerable Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, a distinguished student who also honed his skills under the guidance of Aisu’s son, Aisu Koshichiro. It was Nobutsuna who further refined and adapted the Kage style, ushering forth a new era known as the Shinkage (“New Shadow”) school—a testament to the art’s unyielding evolution and unwavering pursuit of perfection.
Embarking on an arduous martial pilgrimage across Japan, Aisu traversed the nation, bestowing his knowledge upon worthy disciples. Eventually, he returned to Kyushu, the very land that had witnessed the transformative chapters of his life. There, in a serene culmination of his journey, Aisu met his earthly end, succumbing to the embrace of natural causes.
