Essential Martial Arts Training Tools
Whether you’re starting or refining your skill, these are the tools that build real capability. They are real-world tested and proven to improve training and recovery.
Most martial artists plateau. Not because they stop training, but because they stop developing. They repeat what they already know. They rely on comfort. They avoid exposing weaknesses. Real progression comes from returning to fundamentals again and again with better awareness.
These are not random recommendations. Every tool listed here has been used in my own training consistently, over time, to build strength, control, and movement awareness. Each one serves a specific purpose. Each one strengthens a different weakness.
TRAINING TOOLS
Long Resistance Bands (Strength + Explosive Power + Flexibility)
PRODUCT NAME: Fit Simplify Pull up Assist Resistance Bands
How I use it:
Resistance bands are one of my most consistent tools for building controlled strength across full movement patterns.
Used for:
Striking resistance (punches, extensions)
Pull movements (rows, posture work, pullups, scapular strengthening to combat internal shoulder rotation)
Lower body activation (footwork, adductor and abductor fortifiers)
Stretching and increased flexibility
The key is not speed, it’s controlled tension through the entire movement. That’s where real strength develops.
Short Resistance Bands
PRODUCT NAME: Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands
How I use it:
Different resistance levels allow me to scale intensity without breaking form.
Attach around the ankles when doing footwork to begin.
Attach around the ankles and knees as you progress for more power and control.
- Attach to knees and ankles while doing hip thrusts to build the posterior chain (glutes, lower back (erector spinae), and hamstrings).
This keeps training structured instead of random.
Foot Rocker (Ankle & Calf Mobility)
PRODUCT NAME: Yes4All Foot Rocker
How I use it:
This is one of the most overlooked tools. Calf and ankle flexibility is key in all martial arts. This place an important role in lowering receiving and attack angles.
I use it daily for:
Calf stretching
Ankle mobility
Foot activation
Tight ankles limit movement more than most people realize. If your base is restricted, everything above it suffers.
Ankle Straps (Lower Body/Core Control)
PRODUCT NAME: VAIIO Ankle Straps
How I use it:
Used with cables or resistance bands for:
Hip control
Leg strength
Stability work
This builds strength in areas most people neglect especially stabilizers.
Weighted Vest (Full Body Resistance)
PRODUCT NAME: BeatBoost Weighted Vest
Samurai armor was said to weight anywhere from 15-80lbs or more. This vest is sold in weights ranging from 6lbs-150lbs.
How I use it:
Walking training
Bodyweight exercises
Endurance work (HIIT, intense cardio)
- Worn under gi during training (6lb-16lb vests are great for this)
It turns simple movements into strength-building sessions. The goal isn’t intensity, it’s consistent load over time.
Wrist & Ankle Weights (Micro-Resistance Training)
How I use it:
Shadow movements
Light conditioning
Extended time-under-tension work
- Worn under gi during dojo training, useful in bodyweight and resistance training
Small weight. Big impact over time. Especially when used consistently. Available in weight variations ranging from 3lbs-20lbs
HEALTH & RECOVERY
Recovery is an understated part of training as most people only focus on output. But recovery determines how often and how effectively you can train.
Magnesium Bisglycinate (Recovery + Sleep)
Many people us regular Magnesium or Magnesium Glycinate but this formula is said to absorb even better.
How I use it:
Supports:
Muscle recovery
Sleep quality
Nervous system regulation
Better recovery = better performance.
Glucosamine + Chondroitin with MSM (Joint Support)
How I use it:
Used for:
Joint health
Long-term mobility
Reducing wear from repetitive training
Longevity matters.
Fish Oil (Inflammation + Health)
How I use it:
Supports:
Joint health
Heart health
Recovery
This is foundational; not optional.
TRAVEL / UTILITY
